A measurement is only as good as the device used to measure it.
A measuring device is only as good as its tuning to what's being measured.
We tend to tune devices to exactly what we know we want to measure.

In other words, we tend to measure only that which we understand enough to know how to measure.
We generally don't know enough to tune a device to measure something until we have some understanding of it, or happen upon a measurement of it by "mistake".
So why do we so firmly hang on to the notion that if we can't measure it, it doesn't exist?

If we can't measure it, it may simply mean we haven't yet learned how to tune for it.
